Considerations When Choosing a Wisconsin Medicare Advantage Plan

  • Medicare Advantage plans often include Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. Each plan has its own list of covered medications and associated copayments. Be sure to check that your medications are covered.
  • Plans have varying out-of-pocket maximums for their members, meaning that your costs for copayments and deductibles are limited. Depending on your health care needs, these limits can yield a substantial savings over Original Medicare.
  • Be sure to understand the plan rules for referrals to specialists and approval requirements for certain procedures that you may need.
  • A plan in which you are enrolled may decide to stop participating in Medicare at any time, so you may need to choose another Medicare health plan plan for the next year or return to Original Medicare.
  • The rules of your plan can change each year, including out-of-pocket costs and benefits.
  • Check which of your health care providers are in the network of each plan you are considering, as choosing out-of-network providers for your health care generally results higher out-of-pocket costs.
  • Providers may drop out of a plan’s networks over time. At some point you may need to find a new network provider for the next plan year.
  • Many Medicare Advantage plans restrict their networks to local providers in a small geographic area. This may be a concern if you travel frequently.
