Tips for Choosing Between Part D Plans

Generally, the single most important consideration when choosing a plan is how many of your prescription drugs are covered and into which formulary tiers those drugs fall. If more than one plan with all the drugs in the formulary is available, check on any restrictions for accessing those drugs and calculate the monthly costs for those drugs in addition to the premium. Other factors to consider include:

  • Whether plan waives any part or all of the deductible.
  • The amount of co-payments required per prescription.
  • Is coverage included within the donut hole?
  • Does your pharmacy participate in the plan and does the plan have a nationwide pharmacy for traveling purposes?
  • Availability of mail order service to help reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
  • Requirements by a plan to obtain prior authorization for certain drugs before they will be covered.
  • Limits on the size of a drug supply that can be purchased at one time (this may be limited by Medicare).
  • Requirements to try over the counter or generic versions of drugs for a period of time before preferred brands are covered (known as “step therapy”).

Once you choose a Medicare Part D program, you are locked into that plan until the following year’s open enrollment period. Getting stuck with an inadequate plan can result in higher out-of-pocket costs for you, so it is vital that you compare plans carefully and accurately determine your prescription drug usage.
