Wisconsin Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Insurance Fills Gaps in Parts A and B

Original Medicare, or Medicare Parts A and B, provides a basic foundation of benefits to help pay for the most pressing medical expenses. Under this coverage, medical bills are not paid in their entirety. Medicare Supplement insurance is designed to step in and cover these gaps.

Only 80% of a provider's Medicare-approved charges are covered by Original Medicare; you're left to pay co-insurance, co-payments and deductibles. With only Medicare Parts A and B coverage, these remaining costs can add up quickly.

Here's a practical example of your out-of-pocket costs under Original Medicare. Let's say you undergo a major Medicare-eligible surgical procedure at a Medicare-approved hospital that accepts Medicare Assignment. You are responsible for the Part A Deductible of $1,260 and 20% of the Medicare-approved doctors amount plus the $147 Part B Deductible. For ease in calculation, we will use a Medicare Approved amount of $100,000; the hospital charge is $60,000, the doctor charge is $40,000.

Medicare Part A Pays:
Hospital Approved Amount $60,000
Minus Part A Deductible - $1,260
Total Paid By Medicare Part A = $58,740

Medicare Part B Pays:
Approved Doctors Charges $40,000
Minus Part B Deductible - $147
Subtotal $39,853
Multiplied by x 80%
Total Paid By Medicare Part B = $31,882.40

Beneficiary Pays:
Total Not Covered by Part A $1,260
Total Not Covered by Part B + $8,117.60
Total Paid By Beneficiary = $9,377.60

The result is that you would pay $9,377.60 under Original Medicare. With the addition of a Medicare Supplement, or "Medigap" Plan, you will see a significant saving over what is paid by Original Medicare. A Medicare Supplement including the Base plan, Part A Deductible rider and Part B Deductible rider would eliminate these costs.

Medicare Supplement Pays:
Part A Deductible $1,260
Base Plan Covers the 20% + $7,970.60
Annual Part B Deductible + $147
Total Paid By Supplement = $9,377.60
